Linux Works on PS3 Again! | Shadowland
Last Thursday Linux support was removed from the PlayStation 3 with firmware update 3.21. The hacker Geohot promised to solve the problem and he is already finished.
PlayStation 3 consoles that came before the Slim model has had OtherOS support since release, which led some people to run Linux as an alternative. On Thursday April 1 Sony removed the support, which led many users to be upset. To remove a feature that many have had as an argument when they bought the console was simply not okay.
The American hacker Geohot was behind the hack of PlayStation 3 earlier this year and now he has even managed to install Linux on the console after the support has been removed. So far, Geohot has not released the hack but he has uploaded a movie showing that it works. The video below shows the 3.21 firmware version with the “Install Other OS” elective.
According to Geohot you do not have to open up the PS3 console to install an alternative operating system. As a bonus, maybe even another operating system works on the PS3 with the Geohot hack, but he has not had time to try it yet.
Note to the people who removed OtherOS, you are potentially turning 100000+ legit users into “hackers.” There was a huge(20x) traffic spike to this blog after the announcement of 3.21. If I had ads on this site I guess I’d be thanking you, Geohot writes on his blog as a greeting to Sony.
