YDL Linux Archives

Hi

I usually dont post but thought I would “contribute” for once! Thanks for the welcome!

Anyway, if George “has” done what he is stating then he should be able to use this driver in some form.

From GH’s own blog:
As far as the GPU goes, I have full access to the GPU memory space 0×2800… But without a driver, it’s useless. 3D video card drivers are notoriously hard to write, look at the ATI and NVIDIA ones for linux. The best are still the closed source manufacturer ones. I’m not even sure I believe that the HV restricts video card access, just that the OtherOS driver is 2D. If someone skilled in video card driver development comes forward, and they can explain in detail what the HV is restricting, I’ll send them the exploit.

I am posting in response to his above statement as it seems that yld have a driver and seeing what the Zego server is used for, and as Sony’s prefered linux is yld, this is a possible work around.

As I stated before, this may be way off track but, in theory and if GH does have the access he states, we could see some rsx action!

Soft has simplified the setup of Mac-On-Linux, an application that allows the classic Mac OS to run within Linux, and the new software supports recent Apple products, such as the Titanium PowerBook G4 and AirPort wireless networking.

On CDs with or without installation support, YDL 2.0 costs $59.95 or $29.95, respectively; for $289, Terra Soft also ships it pre-installed on an Ultra DMA 66 IDE drive configured for blue-and-white Power Mac G3 or newer models. The software is available now from Terra Soft’s online store.

Dan Burcaw, co-founder and CIO of Loveland, Colo.-based Terra Soft, said that despite the advent of Mac OS X, Mac Linux distributions such as YDL, MkLinux and LinuxPPC have an enduring place in the Mac and Linux communities and play a small but significant role in driving Mac sales. “Mac OS X is Unix-based, but does it fulfill all Linux needs?” Burcaw asked.

New life for old Macs

Burcaw pointed out that while Mac OS X supports only recent Power Macs based on PowerPC G3 or G4 processors, users of earlier hardware generations can use YDL 2.0. “Mac OS X has a very specific compatibility list,” he said. ” If somebody has a [Power Mac] 8500, they can’t run Mac OS X. They may need the robustness of Unix, but Mac OS X just doesn’t run on their hardware. With Yellow Dog Linux, they can say, ‘Look, I’ve got this old machine, and suddenly it’s useful again’ ” as a server.

Furthermore, “lots of people still aren’t happy with the speed of Mac OS X,” Burcaw said. “Sure, we don’t have 3D acceleration or photorealistic icons — but we do have speed.

“We’re not talking the mainstream OS X user, who needs the [Mac] application base,” he added. “These are the hard-core users, the people who like experimenting.”

Burcaw said that in addition to users finding new life in old Macs, many YDL customers are interested in purchasing the latest Apple hardware specifically to run the Linux distribution. “We’re seeing a lot of interest in the new hardware,” he said. “I’m getting lots of questions about support for nVidia cards, the Titanium PowerBook and the new iBook. Even people who haven’t bought Macs yet are asking if their prospective machines will run Yellow Dog Linux 2.0.

“There is actually a significant crowd of people out there who actually buy the new hardware, such as the Titanium PowerBook, just to run Linux. They wouldn’t be buying the machines if there wasn’t a non-BSD solution out there.”

As for Apple’s attitude toward the Linux competition, Burcaw said the Cupertino, Calif. Mac maker’s “attitude is one of acceptance. They know we’re around; they don’t just say, ‘Go away’; but they also don’t say, ‘Here’s everything you need.’”

Burcaw said he believes Apple’s commitment to vertical integration is offset by the business advantages of suffering PowerPC-based Linux distributions to flourish. “While everyone likes to have every solution, Apple makes a boatload off hardware,” he said. “They’d probably prefer that users be on their operating system, but they’d rather have the hardware sale than no sale at all.”
